A humorous & insightful Q&A about improv for adults

Q: Do the words “improv class” inspire any of these reactions?

I'm not funny, I’m not quick, That’s too scary, I’m not creative, I don’t like people looking at me, I might look stupid or silly, I’m an introvert, I’m not an actor, I can’t think of anything more painful than taking an improv class, I want to lie down, I need to vomit?

A : Congratulations! It’s only terror.

Q: What do you mean, 'it's only terror' and I should take the class anyway? How can I do improv if I'm terrified, fer cryin' out loud?

A: You can use what's happening by doing scenes where the person is afraid, or the activity is fleeing the country or the location is an island where everyone quivers. In other words, acknowledge where you're at and use it!

Q: I could never do improv. (I know that’s not a question, by the way.)

A: Everyone already knows how to improvise. (Have you ever had a scripted conversation?) We learn some basic tools and skills to help you improvise on purpose.

Q: What if I make a mistake?

A:  Everyone who’s committed a boo-boo, a flub up, a faux pas, an oopsy-daisy has survived and even had fun. Mistakes are gifts. Mistakes are encouraged because it means you're taking risks and not being careful. We celebrate mistakes in class with whooping and cheering and our own version of the hokey pokey.

Q: What is improvisation anyway?

A:  I’m glad you asked! Improvisation is about responding to what’s

happening in the moment. It’s about listening and responding to your scene partner, getting out of your head and accessing your intuition.

Q: What happens in a class?

A:  Because some adults have teensy, tinsy issues about ‘doing things

the right way’ and perfectionsim, we start with very simple games and then build from there. We do a lot things simultaneously in a group, so no one person is put on the spot. Usually there’s a problem to solve in a game so there’s something to focus on. We evaluaate if the problem was solved and why or why not. There's no 'right/wrong/good/bad. The intention is to establish a fun, supportive environment, have a good time and delight in each other’s spirit.

Q: What if I’m not funny enough or at all? Will I have to leave the room?

A:  I couldn’t care less about people being funny--I care about people being authentic and following their impulses. My favorite quote about this is: “Don’t look for the funny, the funny will find you.”

Q: Will there be a test?

A:  The only test is to show up. After that it’s all gravy.

Q: What should I bring to class?

A:  Courage, curiosity, comfortable play clothes.
